World famous chocholate cake and 5 other Viennese marvels

The capital of Austria has played an important role throughout its whole history. Consequently, it's the birthplace of many world-famous buildings, monuments, brands and products.

1. SACHER CAKE

The "Sachertorte" is a famous Viennese cake and probably the most famous chocolate cake in the world since 1832. The delicious treat consists of 3 layers of chocolate sponge cake with thickly spread apricot jam in between and on the top. The whole cake is covered in chocolate icing. When served properly, it's presented to you with a portion of unsweetened whipped cream. The recipe remains a well-kept secret of the Sacher Hotel in Vienna, where you can enjoy a slice of the original Sachertorte.

2. WIENER SCHNITZEL

When discussing Viennese cuisine, probably the most famous Schnitzel in the world comes to mind - the Wiener Schnitzel. Many legends and stories revolve around its origin, but they all agree about how it's made. Premium veal coated in eggs, flour and special "Kaiser" breadcrumbs is to be fried in lard until golden-brown. Served with the side of potato salad, this truly is a meal fit for any schnitzel-lover out there. You can enjoy an original Wiener Schnitzel at the Figlmüller restaurant in Vienna.

3. GIANT FERRIS WHEEL

When in Vienna, a definite must-do is a ride on the Giant Ferris Wheel. Located in Prater, it's visible from far away. It was built in 1897 to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of Emperor Franz Josef I. In 1944 the wheel burned down and was rebuilt a year later, along with St. Stephen's Cathedral, the State Opera House and the Burgtheater. Once in the cart, you can enjoy one of the best views Vienna has to offer. You can rise high above the rooftops in one of its special luxury cabins and indulge in a romantic candlelight dinner or relaxing cocktail served for you and your special someone.

4. SPANISH RIDING SCHOOL

Who doesn't know the gorgeous snow-white Lipizzaner Stallions? When visiting Vienna you simply have to visit Hofburg, the home of Spanish Riding School. Dating back to the 16th century, it's the oldest and most famous riding institution in the world. It offers public performances for tourists, as well as insight into the horses' training routines. Riders perform classical jumps with elegance and precision, leaving both adults and their young ones on their toes. All events take place in a stunning setting of Hofburg's Winter Riding School. Take a look for yourself and book tickets to their breathtaking performances  here.

5. FIAKER - HORSE-DRAWN CARRIAGES

A romantic ride with the two-horse carriage is definitely the coziest way to get about Vienna. More than 1000 fiakers roamed the roads in Vienna from 1860 to 1900. The drivers were often gentlemen known all around the city, sometimes performing as singers. Located all around the city center, they can take you from one attraction to the other, just the way fine gentlemen used to get about in the old days. Treat yourself with the VIP Mozart Orchestra concerts  in Musikverein or in the  State Opera  and experience the carriage ride for free!

6. MANNER WAFERS

The Original Neapolitan Wafers have become a symbol of Viennese culture and lifestyle. They are the most famous brand of wafers and are known all around the globe. Manners consist of 5 layers of wafers filled with four layers of hazelnut cocoa cream. The recipe remained unchanged ever since their invention in 1898 by the company's founder Josef Manner I. Over 4000 Manner Wafers are sold each day at the Manner shop in Vienna.
